Wallpaper Photos for August 2011

The tiny 3/4" leaves of the Florida Holly (also called Singapore Holly) are scalloped and sharply pointed exactly like miniature holly leaves, but this native of the West Indies is related to the surinam cherry and not a true holly at all. To give scale to the photograph, the red fruit is less than half an inch in diameter.

Florida holly is often listed in Bonsai guides because of its small leaves and slow growth habit. Slow growth is an understatement. The specimen you see pictured was planted by the landscaper at my parents new house before I was born over 55 years ago!! The leaves are so pointy that I have been stuck many times over the years while mowing or trimming around the house.
