Wallpaper Photos for May 2011

This arbor, at my parent's house, sports a healthy growth of Confederate Jasmine which, while it's blooming fresh for spring, also has some remaining bright red leaves from last winter. There is more than one reason for the "Confederate" in the name. It's a plant that grows best in the warmer climes of the Southern states, but it's also not a "real" jasmine but a distant member of the milkweed family.

The strange octopoid plant hanging in the center of the arbor is a staghorn fern, another plant ideal for subtropical climes. It often is grown clinging to the trunk of trees but is not parasitic gaining sustenance only from debris and water which fall onto it. Our hanging fern is a split from a 40 year old specimin and gets only water and occasional fertilizer. It is, however, fond of bananas which we drop into the top of it once a month or so.
