Wallpaper Photos for January 2012

A couple of months ago I used a photo featuring golden rain trees which go from bright yellow blooms to paper-like salmon-colored seed pods which resemble miniature Japanese lanterns. The picture at the right shows how they looked on the tree. I took home several bracts thinking we could dry them and perhaps try planting the seeds. I was surprised at how the seed pods held up and after several weeks the colors became more subdued and, I thought, really beautiful and worthy of a close-up photo session of their own. To get the calendar picture I used low light, a dark crimson backdrop, and a wide-open lens for a very shallow depth of field.
